What a payslip in India must show

No central law prescribes a payslip layout, but the Payment of Wages Act, state Shops and Establishments Acts and the Code on Wages, 2019 all expect a written wage record, and inspectors, banks and visa officers look for the same things:

  • Employer name and address; employee name and ID.
  • Pay period, pay date, paid days and loss-of-pay days.
  • Each earning separately: basic, dearness allowance, HRA, other allowances.
  • Each deduction separately: EPF, ESI, professional tax, TDS, loans or advances.
  • Gross earnings, total deductions, net pay, and net pay in words.
  • Identifiers that tie the slip to statutory records: PAN, UAN, bank account.

Which template to use

  • Classic: boxed sections with a green net-pay card. The standard Indian salary slip.
  • Modern: brand-colour header band with your logo. For slips employees will screenshot.
  • Minimal: rules instead of boxes, more whitespace.
  • Compact: denser type for monthly bulk printing.

Typical components on an Indian salary slip

Earnings: basic (often 40–50% of CTC), dearness allowance, house rent allowance, conveyance, special allowance, overtime, bonus. Deductions: employee provident fund (12% of PF wages up to the ₹15,000 ceiling), ESI (0.75% of wages up to ₹21,000), professional tax (state slab, up to ₹200 a month in most states), TDS on salary, loan recovery. The employer's PF and ESI shares are costs to the company and do not appear as deductions.
